Journeys Hits the Blog Headlines

Today Journeys in Creative Writing is being featured by an Australian blogging network Where the Blog Are You?
It's proving a fine way for Aussie writers to support each other. The comments and emails from WTBAY are already coming in to my desktop today and it's a lot of fun.
There are many caring talented people out there in Ausland and sometimes it's a matter of being able to find them.
Thanks to Louisa for helping out.
Cheers
June

  6. Hi Belinda
Thanks for dropping into Journeys. I just peeked at your blog and enjoyed your piece on how you feel about writing.
I like to ring the changes myself - in everything about my stories, including the point of view. That's what creates a lot of the fun.
I find that so much depends on the type of story and the characters you're dealing with. They'll often tell you themselves.
Even third person omniscient is fun - then you can hop from being one person to another, getting into whatever heads are around at the time.
My lecturers used to say don't worry too much about the point of view to begin with. Feel the story and decide on making changes later.
I can't see a problem with first person if you feel comfortable with it in the particular circumstances. It can bring intimacy to the story.
Does your partner worry that you will be identified as the "I" character? I don't think readers will do that in a fictional short story ...
    Just have fun!
    Cheers

  10. Whoa! Congratulations June! This is a great breakthrough.

Happy for you. You go girl! =)

And I'm glad so many bloggers who are also fellow writers commented. It's great to find people like them. Off to read their sites now.

For POVs, I'm having a hard time with getting to solid ground on the characterization when it comes to the omniscient voice. I feel I have so much more to learn and practice in that field. The first person POV is as you've pointed out, more 'intimate' and you can establish an immediate rapport between you and the reader because it's such fun expressing the character. It's also more rounded, more 3D, layers would be displayed more evidently than you would if you were doing the omniscient voice. Omniscient is a bit more challenging.

  11. Of course you're right Kate. It was strange when I looked at today's authors' literary quote that I have at the bottom of the blog: 'There are no laws for the novel. There never have been, nor can there ever be.' Doris Lessing.
I'm sure she'd want that to apply to short stories too!
Although of course it's far easier to break the rules in a meaningful way if you first KNOW THEM.
